Friendly Space

I recently made a new friend. I’m happy about it.

It seems I frequently make new friends. I’m lucky that way. But I think everyone is looking to make a new friend, in most situations. Maybe one just needs to be open to it.

Evidence that the universe is a friendly place: a new friend is probably just around the corner.

Evidence that the universe is a friendly place: that I am here. That I act kindly and generously without expecting recompense. Sometimes I give more than I’m comfortable with and that makes me irritated. But I’m getting better at that — at only giving what I am comfortable with.

It feels a bit impermissible to me to be self-congratulatory like that, but I’m quite sure that, to many other people, my existence is evidence that the universe is a friendly place.

Evidence that the universe is a friendly space: the existence of raspberry jam.

And butter.

And toast.

And coffee.

And taste buds to enjoy it.

And the opportunity to enjoy it, even if just for one day.

Humans have the ability to play with one another — to interact purely for mutual enjoyment. Being able to play and joke around with others is one of my primary forms of amusement. Without this, life is drab. With it, life is a joy.

A friend and her boyfriend were visiting me from out of town. They left earlier today. The boyfriend was a bit dubious of me, at first, I think. I imagined he was wondering if R (the woman) and I had been intimate in the past because he seemed to get a little anxious every time he heard about how much fun we had during her previous visit.  Over the weekend it seemed he became relaxed and unguarded. I think it was a mixture of simply sharing experiences, talking, telling stories that let him feel at east.

At any rate, it was very nice and really wonderful to share my life and apartment with friends. I do that far too rarely.
